MYOTONIC® is an uterotonic amine alkaloid which causes contraction of uterine smooth muscle with an increase in contraction frequency and amplitude at low doses and an elevation of uterine basal tone at higher dose. The mechanism of action involves direct uterine smooth muscle stimulation through alpha-adrenergic receptor. Methylergometrine provokes rapid and potent concentrations of the uterine muscles, stopping uterine hemorrhage. Compared with the alkaloids of the ergotamine group, its effect on peripheral vessels is weak and blood pressure is rarely increase.
